LANs and WANs
|
Fundamental to every forward looking company’s business is it’s data network. Whether used for simple E-mail and Internet access, sharing of information and resources, or state-of-the-art E-commerce activities, the local area network (LAN) has become indispensable. The way in which we work is changing, and so LANs have to change to meet the new demands placed upon them by new applications. These demands are for more speed, total reliability, consistency of response, and dependable security. The LAN may consist of interface cards, hubs, switches, bridges, routers, gateways, file servers, web servers, firewalls, and, of course, the necessary software to manage it all. All you have to do is choose the right bits and connect them together, alternatively you can call us – after all our experts have been designing networks for the last twenty years! A LAN connects together people within a building or campus, but for those people to talk to the outside world a wide area network (WAN) is needed. A WAN may be as simple as a computer with a modem connected to an ordinary telephone line, or as complex as an international network carrying integrated data, voice, and video traffic. The bulk of the costs associated with running a WAN are paid to the telephone companies, so regardless of the size of the network, selecting the most effective services and tariffs amongst the myriad options is crucial. The choice of available technologies is constantly changing with traditional analogue and leased line connections being supplemented with digital ISDN, ATM, and new emerging DSL services. InfoDec can not only analyse your needs and manage the provision of the most cost-effective services, but can also supply and install the equipment required to complete the picture.
